About

The South Mississippi Housing Authority (SMHA) last accepted Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list applications from June 17, 2024, until June 21, 2024. There is no notice when this waiting list will reopen.

Preferences

This waiting list had the following preferences:

  • Families living in the PHA’s public housing unit, RAD unit or other PBV unit who have been displaced and where there is no safe alternative in the public housing program, or another RAD or PBV site available for transfer. 50 points.
  • Natural Disaster Preference: Those who have been displaced by natural disaster by a federally declared natural disaster and who are still without adequate housing. 25 points.
  • Disabled Preference: head of household or spouse or sole member is a person living with disabilities. 15 points.
  • Elderly Preference: An elderly family whose head of household, co-head or sole member is at least 62 years of age. 15 points.
  • Families with Children. 15 points.
  • Working Preference: Employed and has worked an average of 30 hours per week for the previous 6 months. 10 points.
  • Homeless Preference: A family of individuals meeting HUD'S definition of Homelessness. 10 points.
  • Residency Preference: A family whose head, co-head, spouse or sole member resides in any of the 14 counties in the jurisdiction. 5 points.
  • Veteran Preference: A  family or individual verified as a Veteran through Veterans Affairs or as a state veteran as a person who served in the active military, and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. 5 points.

Selection Process

10,000 selected applicants were placed on the waiting list by random lottery, by order of preferences.

Application Method

To apply while the waitlist was open, applicants were required to complete the online application.
