Katy I-Hsuan Chiang began her music journey in Taiwan first on the piano at the age of six, and the cello when she was eight. She showed a talent in cello early in her studies and was a prize-winner of several competitions in Taiwan. Ms. Chiang received her Bachelor of Music degree in Cello Performance from the University of Maryland College Park where she was awarded a full merit-based scholarship. She continued her education by pursuing her Master of Music degree at UMCP under the guidance of Dr. Eric Kutz. Her previous private teachers include David Teie (National Symphony Orchestra), Peter Wiley (Guarneri Quartet), Evelyn Elsing, and Ben Myers. Some of the cello and chamber masterclasses that Ms. Chiang participated in were led by Peter Wiley and Michael Tree (members of the Guarneri Quartet), Darrett Adkins (the Juilliard School), Amit Peled (Peabody Institute), Kenneth Slowik (Smithsonian Chamber Music Society), the Tempest Trio, Miami Quartet, and Quatuor Danel. As a frequent scholarship recipient for summer festivals, Ms. Chiang has also performed internationally in Italy and Slovenia. She is a passionate cello teacher, a freelance musician, and the cellist in the Fairmount String Quartet. Ms. Chiang teaches throughout the Baltimore-Washington area and she has a large studio in Columbia, Maryland. She is on the cello faculty at Howard Community College, where she is also a chamber music coach. In her recent musical project – the Alphabet Concert Series, Ms. Chiang aims to introduce more composers to the general public in a recital setting and to discover more cello repertoire.
