Marriage is not something to be entered into lightly; it is a lifetime commitment. Just as the shoreline of the beach is an ever-changing landscape, so too is marriage; one must be committed to the work it takes to not only make your vows, but to keep them. This is why I see it as important that a ceremony include not just 'words,' but a conversation about WHY you want to make this commitment, as well as an inclusion of those attending in how they will support you in the days ahead following your ceremony.
THIS is why I enjoy being a part of joining couples in marriage: it's laying the foundation, putting all present into the scene, and charging each with the task of making it hold fast before God.
