If you're from the North Fork of Long Island or spend at least part of your time in its general vicinity, we may have crossed paths already - at a bar, a restaurant, a backyard party, or a special event. If we haven't yet, nice to meet you.
I have been DJing all of the above and more around the area consistently since 2016 in numerous venues in the area. And I began my journey into DJing many years before this current journey, when I spent hours a day learning the art of hip hop scratch DJing and turntablist skills.
DJing, music production, music collecting/cataloging, music appreciation, and playing instruments have been part of my life ever since I was a young kid. As cliche as it may sound, music is one thing I cannot live without and it both keeps me up at night and also moving throughout the day (I do get sleep!)
When it comes to DJing, I am bit obsessive about not only staying up to date, but also making sure I haven't forgotten classics from the past as well. I make sure to carry unique remixes in my collection so I can easily bridge songs from different styles that otherwise wouldn't work together. And I like to make sure I maintain a breadth in my familiarity with music that makes dance floors pop. That means my sets can span decades and styles within minutes, but done in a way that flows and makes sense musically.
If you want to know what DJs "actually do", it's this. You read a room and have to figure out the most musical way to bridge the disparate musical tastes of the people occupying the space in front of you in a fun and engaging way. And the only way to get this done in a seamless and aesthetic way is to listen to and experiment with a large and wide array of music. And the only way to do this effectively is to be passionate about your craft.
While many DJ skills can be practiced in the studio, the most important ones are honed in public and in front of audiences. The past few years I am averaging roughly 70-80 gigs/events per season. I don't enjoy repeating myself, so I make sure to take every opportunity I have when playing out to try new mix pathways. I am always discovering new ways to mix songs together depending on the venue, the mood, time of year, time of day, and of course the crowd.
As far as equipment goes, I bring everything that is needed for my events and also own and carry a backup system in the event should anything happen to the main one. My main setup is a Pioneer Rev 7 controller used with an M1 Pro MacBook Pro, 2 Yamaha DXR 12 PA speakers, and an RCF 705 ASII subwoofer. My secondary setup is the same, but with 2 Technics Turntables, Phase DJ wireless vinyl tracking, and a Pioneer DJM S7 mixer.
