Billy is a Providence, Rhode Island born singer and a songwriter whose intimate, plaintive guitar and vocal work draws from off center folk, Cosmic country, punk and dark minimal rock with an emphasis on composition. He is known for song styles that beg comparisons to Elliot Smith, Carol King, Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices or even James Mercer of The Shins and his love of the guitar work of John Fahey, and Elizabeth Cotton (among many)
Music was ever present in his working class, boyhood home. When adolescence struck however, the counterculture and the punk, garage, noise and art rock of Bouchard's art school hometown got under his skin. In middle school he began forming proto bands with friends. As a naive young indie rocker, Bouchard signed a recording deal with Atlantic Records, and since, a residency in California (and now his New York home) has led to many fruitful collaborations (Bart Davenport, Samiam, Aaron Pfenning of Chairlift, Ice Balloons, Guitar Shorty, Inhaler, Christian Burns, Sam Jayne of Love as Laughter) recording for a slew of labels, (Atlantic, MCA, No Idea, Fat Wreck Chords, Lizard King Records, Data Records, Adeline Records) writing and recording music with a children's theatre workshop (Paper Canoe), write (as well as ghost write) and record (including session work) with grammy award winning producers (Jeff Saltzman, Chris Dugan) and toured to play live in more than 40 different countries. Opening for the likes of Madness, Page and Plant, Sky Ferrara, Cat Power and countless others...
Most guitar players who teach, focus on technique, and while that is important to a well rounded player, my particular focus is on composition and the art of conveying a personal truth for each performer.
