​Portraits for Modern People is the brain child and business of Katy O'Connor. Katy has been an artist, animator and educator for the past 20 years. She has her bachelors and masters in painting and drawing. Previous to opening her own business Katy was an animator and designer at Flat Black Films for 14 years. She was a crucial in helping to develop the rotoscoped look that has become so popular in digital animation. She was a lead animator in the ground breaking animated movie "Waking Life". During her years at Flat Black she worked with many different clients making sure that their visions became a reality.
This site is her umbrella site for live event drawing, illustration, graphic design and private art lessons.
ABOUT PORTRAITS FOR MODERN PEOPLE: At your wedding, party, fundraiser, etc. Katy will make live portrait sketches of your guests. Similar to caricatures, but more artistic and more elegant, this is a wonderful form of entertainment and memory making. Guests who get their portraits made will have a forever gift and those who do not will enjoy the excitement of seeing the artistic process. Typically these portraits are watercolor on watercolor paper; however, portraits can also be in colored pencil, pastel, pencil, charcoal or marker.
Along with the portraits Katy can be hired to create action sketches and gestures of the happenings at these events, to chronicle through watercolor special moments such as the first dance or cutting of the cake.
Katy is also available to make watercolors of past events, paintings from photos, portraits of loved ones, houses and pets, and editorial art for digital or print.
Live Event Art Making: This is my favorite thing to do as I am completely in the moment interpreting my surroundings through art and I love to draw and paint people from life.
Illustration: I love the challenge of making a clients ideas get from brain to page.
Teaching: Seeing progress in someone's art work and watching them see their own progress.
Graphic Design: My husband and I collaborate on graphic design and logo work and I enjoy working with him.
