I have 10 years of tutoring experience and 5 years of classroom experience teaching math to students from grades 6 through college level. I take a strengths-based approach to my work with students, building on what they know and how they prefer to learn and communicate. Conceptual understanding is a priority for me - I don't just want to help my students get "right answers" - my goal is that they not only learn how to do procedures, but they learn how to reason through a problem, persevere, think critically, and develop a positive relationship with mathematics.
I have a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in mathematics. I am currently a PhD candidate in the School of Education at the University of Michigan. In my work at U of M, I teach math methods courses for prospective elementary teachers, and I conduct research on communication between teachers and students about math. I focus specifically on communication across difference, when the teacher and student have different race, gender, and language identities and experience. What I learn from my research is directly applicable to my work as a tutor. With my experience and expertise in both the discipline of mathematics and the practice of teaching, I promise that you will see an improvement in more than just grades - you will be developing the skills you need to be successful in all of your math classes to come.
