I’m a martial artist, Focus Counter-Violence specialist, and law enforcement defensive tactics instructor with more than 30 years of experience in various martial arts such as: wrestling, Aikido, Shorei-ryu, Tang-Soo-Do, Taekwondo, Mixed Martial Arts, and Jeet-Kune-Do. I teach and train according to the Jeet-Kune-Do (JKD) training method. JKD was made famous by martial arts pioneer and actor Bruce Lee. Jeet-Kune-Do translates to “The Way of the Intercepting Fist.” It is NOT and was never intended to be a martial arts system. It is simply a martial arts training method focused on adapting what is useful, rejecting what is useless, and adding what is specifically your own. JKD includes techniques and strategies from many arts and is only limited by the imagination of the practitioner. JKD training is continuously changing and evolving with every new practitioner through their expression of the martial arts. Many people refer to JKD as the original Mixed Martial Art. I'm a versatile instructor and coach that truly is a jack of all trades. I started wrestling as a kid which naturally evolved into traditional martial arts before the popularity of modern day Mixed Martial Arts competition. Little did I know at the time, my interest in mixing disiplines would soon become standard in Mixed Martial Arts competition. So, getting involved in modern style Mixed Martial Arts competition and coaching was a natural path for me. In the late 90's, I got introduced to Jeet-Kune-Do which really focused all my combat sports and martial arts experience into the realm of reality based self-defense. In my adult life, I began a career in law enforcement which started in the military, then corrections, and then onto police. About 20 years ago, I started training with a Jeet-Kune-Do intructor by the name of Michael Vanbeek, founder of Focus Counter-Violence. Training with Mike is truly a unique experience and privilege. I am currently a Senior Instructor/Law Enforcement Consultant for Focus Counter-Violence. This is more than self-defense training. It is an in-depth education into the culture of violence. When it comes to violence, there is no such thing as a "works for all" self-defense system. We, at Focus Counter Violence, develop and train counter violence strategies and techniques that specifically fulfill the clients' unique vulnerabilities and strengths.
