Samuel Thompson enjoys a career as a performer, educator, journalist and arts administrator. Recent solo appearances include the premiere of The Chevalier at the Tanglewood Music Center and the East Coast premiere of Florence Price's Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey. Winner of a 2020 Sphinx MPower Artist Award, Mr. Thompson has performed in venues throughout North America in addition to having been presented in concert and recital in cities including New Haven, Washington DC, Baltimore, Austin, Chicago, Miami, and both Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina. He has also participated in Spoleto Festival USA, the Gateways Music Festival, the Colour of Music Festival and the International Saint-Georges Festival.
An active member of the regional arts community, Samuel regularly performs with Philadelphia’s Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, National Philharmonic, and several ensembles in Washington DC.
In addition to performing, Thompson is a well-regarded teacher and chamber music coach who has taught group and private lessons, chamber music and audition preparation to students ranging from beginners to advanced high school students, university and conservatory undergraduates and adult amateurs. He was the Program Director of the Bridges Program of MAESTRO Ensembles from 2019-2022 and currently serves as a coach for the DC Youth Orchestra Program. In recent years, he has given master classes at the Lyceum Mozartiana de la Habana and served as a guest clinician at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra. He has held teaching positions at the Four Strings Academy Summer Intensive Program, Sphinx Overture Summer Summer Program, Baltimore Symphony OrchKids, Waldorf School of Baltimore, the Music School at Bryn Mawr and the Vermont Music and Arts Center.
Student successes include:
Successful audition for the Northern Virginia District Eleven Junior District Orchestra (2016)
Superior and Excellent Ratings at the Virginia Music Educators Association District Solo and Ensemble Festival (2016)
Superior Ratings at the Maryland Music Educators Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival (2015-16)
Superior and Excellent Ratings at the Maryland Music Educations Association District Solo and Ensemble Festival (2015-16)
Acceptance into the Harford Youth Orchestra (2014-15)
Acceptance into the Baltimore County All-County Orchestra (2013)
I particularly enjoy working with students who have played for a few years yet need much more in-depth guidance. I also take great pride in teaching beginning students, as it is vital that beginners be guided on the right path.
