In 1997, KCDC received a $22 million HOPE VI federal grant to revitalize public housing and the surrounding neighborhood in Mechanicsville. The agency replaced outdated barrack-style apartments with single-family and duplex homes throughout the neighborhood and designed them to fit architecturally with existing structures. New streets and sidewalks were added and alleys were built to provide rear access to the homes. The Mechanicsville community includes two churches, a greenway and community park.
