Hello! My name is Darren and I’ve been practicing yoga for more than 25 years. I began my practice as a theater student at FAU as a way of preparing myself for singing and performing in front of audiences. The goal was to calm and center myself, to block out what was going on around me externally and focus inward. Years later, as a way of dealing with the stresses of life (which we can all struggle with at times), I turned deeply to yoga because I needed those same qualities off stage; to be able to calm myself and connect back to my inner voice, my inner strength. Yoga has become an invaluable tool for me, and it can for you too!
And how does singing tie in with yoga? As a professional opera singer (one of my other passions) I have learned to create as much resonance and vibration as possible using breath and voice. During our session we can chant the powerful "om" together, creating vibrations in the body and freeing our inner and outer voice; or I can sing for you to help bring you into a relaxed and centered state of being.
We'll do a bit of breathwork (pranayama), followed by some yoga poses (asanas) to stretch and open up the body, challenge ourselves, and find balance. I love teaching both beginner and advanced students!
We can end our time together with a musical instrument or two, including crystal singing bowls, which bring harmony to the mind and body and induce a theta brainwave state- the state of ultimate relaxation and meditation.
